Civil War illustrations in contemporary magazines collection, 1861-1862.

This collection consists of illustrations from Harper's Weekly and the London Illustrated News in 1861 and 1862 depicting Civil War events concerning Alabama or Alabamians. One sheet is a reproduction of a drawing from the London Illustrated News showing the 71st New York Infantry engaging the 4th Alabama Infantry at the battle of Bull Run in 1861. The remaining drawings are original pages or portions of pages from Harper's Weekly in 1862. There are two copies of "Union Southern Men Welcoming Our Gun-Boats in Alabama," which are probably from February 1862 when federal gunboats made raids on the Tennessee River in Alabama after the fall of Fort Henry. One full page from the August 16, 1862, edition of Harper's contains three illustrations. On one side is "Sunday at General McClellan's Headquarters -- Divine Services in Camp," and on the reverse is "The War in North Alabama -- Burning the Bridge Over the Tennessee, at Decatur" and "The War in North Alabama --Rout of a Rebel Force, Under General Ledbetter, Near Bridgeport."
